## What Does Siding Repair Cover?

Did another company tell you your whole house needs new siding? Most of the time, it doesn’t. Siding repair in Grand Rapids usually means fixing a few bad spots, not tearing off every wall.

Here’s what we fix:

- Cracked, loose, and missing vinyl panels
- Broken fiber cement planks
- Split or rotted wood boards

While the wall is open, we check what’s underneath. If the rest of your siding is in good shape, it stays put.

That’s the whole idea behind how we work as a

Grand Rapids siding contractor

[/ →](/)

. A lot of Grand Rapids homeowners call us after another company told them they need all new siding. Sometimes that’s true. Often it isn’t.

Local weather is hard on exteriors. Brace Homes reports that Grand Rapids gets 64 to 72 inches of snow a year, thanks to lake-effect storms off Lake Michigan. The national average is about 28 inches. We’ll tell you straight when a repair is enough and when it isn’t.

## How Do You Repair Vinyl Siding?

Vinyl panels lock into each other along the bottom edge. Here’s how a typical fix goes:

1. Use a **siding zip tool** to unlock the course above the damage. This exposes the **nail hem** of the damaged panel.
2. Pull the nails.
3. Slide the bad piece out.
4. Slide the new piece in.
5. Nail it in the center of the slots, not tight against the wall.

That last step matters most. Vinyl needs a **thermal expansion gap** so it can grow in summer and shrink in winter. The Vinyl Siding Institute’s installation manual calls for about 1/32 inch of space under the nail head, roughly the thickness of a dime.

Nail it too tight and you get **buckling and warping** a few months later. That’s one of the most common problems we fix on other people’s work.

Matching matters too. Vinyl suffers **color fading and oxidation**, especially on south and west walls. A brand-new panel next to years-old siding rarely looks identical, so we look for the closest color and profile available and tell you up front how close it will look.

## How Do You Repair Fiber Cement and Wood Siding?

Fiber cement and wood are repaired a board at a time. The steps look like this:

- Cut out the damaged board
- Check the wall behind it
- Fit a new board with the same reveal
- Prime the new board
- Seal the **caulk joints**
- Paint the repair to match

Fiber cement lap siding is usually **blind nailed**, so the nails hide under the next course up. James Hardie, the maker of HardiePlank, lists blind nailing as the preferred method for its lap siding. It gives you a cleaner look, with no nail heads showing.

For older wood siding, we match the profile as closely as we can. Our

wood and cedar siding

[/wood-and-cedar-siding/ →](/wood-and-cedar-siding/)

page goes deeper on board-by-board work for older homes.

## Why Check Behind the Damage?

A cracked panel is sometimes just a cracked panel. Other times it’s the first thing you can see of a bigger problem. Water that gets past the siding can soak the house wrap and cause **sheathing dry rot** that spreads quietly.

So while the wall is open, we look. Here’s what we check:

- The house wrap
- The **flashing integration** around windows and trim
- The **OSB substrate**
- The **weep holes** at the bottom of vinyl courses

Those tiny holes let water that gets behind the siding drain out. Tall Pines Roofing warns that painting over them can trap moisture right where it does the most harm.

If something is wet or soft, we show you before we fix it and tell you what it adds to the price. Exterior contractors often point to spongy spots, warped panels, and a musty smell as signs that water is already inside the wall. Our guide on

signs of water damage behind siding

[/guide/signs-of-water-damage-behind-siding/ →](/guide/signs-of-water-damage-behind-siding/)

covers what to look for between visits.

## Repair or Replace?

**Spot replacement** makes sense when the damage is in one area, the wall behind it is sound, and we can match the material. Here’s the quick version:

| What we find | Usually the better move |
| --- | --- |
| Damage in one area, sound wall, matching material available | Spot replacement |
| Cracking, rot, or failed wrap on most walls | A whole-house siding replacement |
| Wet or soft spots behind the siding | Fix the cause first, then repair or replace |

Money matters here, so check the numbers. Angi’s 2026 data puts professional siding repair at $367 to $1,525 on average, depending on material and how much is damaged. Once repairs start stacking up across several walls, replacement often becomes the smarter spend.

## Common Problems We Fix

Problem 01

### Cracked panels from cold-weather hits

Vinyl gets brittle in a Michigan winter. A snowblower, a hockey puck or a chunk of ice can crack a panel that would have flexed in July.

Problem 02

### Wavy or buckling siding

Vinyl nailed too tight can't expand in summer heat, so it ripples. Sometimes it's a quick re-hang. Sometimes moisture behind it is the real cause.

Problem 03

### Panels blown loose

Wind gets under a loose panel and unzips the course above it. Caught early, it's often a simple re-lock and re-nail.

Problem 04

### Split or rotted boards

Wood and fiber cement boards near the ground, under windows or behind gutters take the most water. We replace the bad boards, not the whole wall.

## How Much Does Siding Repair Cost in Grand Rapids?

Cost depends on the material, the number of panels or boards, height and access, and any damage underneath. Free estimate with a straight price range.

No figures over the phone

Factor 01

### Material

Vinyl panels, fiber cement planks and wood boards each take different parts, tools and finishing.

Factor 02

### How much is damaged

A few panels is a different job than a whole wall. We count what actually needs replacing.

Factor 03

### Height and access

A first-floor panel off a stepladder costs less than a second-story gable that needs ladders or staging.

Factor 04

### What's behind it

If the wrap or sheathing behind the damage is wet or soft, we show you and price the fix before doing it.

Factor 05

### Matching

Finding the closest color and profile can take sourcing time, especially for older or discontinued siding.

Factor 06

### Finish work

Wood and fiber cement repairs need priming, caulking and paint or stain to blend in.

Why Us for Repair

## Why Grand Rapids Homeowners Call Us for Siding Repair

01

### We leave good siding alone

If the rest of your siding is sound, it stays. We're not going to talk you into a whole house of new siding you don't need.

02

### Small jobs are normal for us

A few cracked panels or a couple of bad boards is a regular day. You won't get brushed off for a small repair.

03

### Closest match, told up front

We look for the closest color and profile available and tell you honestly how close we can get before we start.

04

### We check behind the damage

A cracked panel can hide wet sheathing. We look while the wall is open so the problem doesn't keep growing.

01

### Can you just repair my siding instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. If the damage is limited, the wall underneath is sound and we can match the material, we fix the damaged panels or boards and leave the rest of your siding in place.

02

### Will the repaired siding match the rest of my house?

We look for the closest color and profile available. Older or faded siding may not match perfectly, and we'll tell you up front how close we can get.

03

### Do you take small siding repair jobs?

Yes. A few cracked panels or a couple of bad boards is a normal job for us.

04

### Why is my siding wavy or buckling?

Usually vinyl was nailed too tight to expand in summer heat, or moisture has swollen the wood or sheathing behind it. Some causes are a quick re-hang; others mean water is getting in.

05

### How much does siding repair cost in Grand Rapids?

It depends on the material, how many panels or boards are damaged, how high they are and whether there's damage behind them. We give you a straight price range at the free estimate.

06

### Can you repair just a few fiber cement boards?

Yes. Broken or damaged fiber cement planks can be replaced individually and painted to blend with the wall.

07

### Can you replace just a few cedar boards?

Yes. Wood siding is a good candidate for board-by-board repair. We match the profile, back-prime the new boards and stain or paint them to blend in.

08

### Can you fix siding in the winter?

Often, yes, especially if a panel is loose or a hole is letting weather in. Cold vinyl needs careful handling, and paint or caulk may need to wait for a warmer day to finish.

09

### What if the repair turns up a bigger problem?

We stop and show you. If wet sheathing or failed flashing goes further than we thought, we explain the options and the price before doing any extra work.

10

### How do I know if I need repair or full replacement?

If the damage is in one area, the wall behind it is solid and we can match the siding, repair usually makes sense. Widespread cracking, rot or failed wrap across many walls points to replacement.
